Even Beyoncé doesn’t like bills, bills, bills.
The music superstar is contesting the Internal Revenue Service’s claim that it owes the US government $2.7 million in taxes.
According to United States Tax Court documents obtained by Page Six, Beyoncé filed a petition on April 17 in which she alleges that the board made several mistakes in determining her 2018 and 2019 tax returns.
For example, the 41-year-old objected through her lawyer that an itemized deduction of $868,766 from a charity contribution in 2018 should be allowed.
It’s unclear what philanthropy this is about, but the “Cuff It” singer is the founder of the BeyGood Foundation, which has been helping with education, disaster relief, mental health, and more since 2013.
He has also supported a number of other charities throughout his career.
The petition also alleged that the IRS did not allow Beyoncé’s business income deductions, utilities, insurance, management fees, legal services, and professional services sections for 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Also, if the “Crazy In Love” singer owes any tax delinquency – which happens when there is a discrepancy between the amount the person reported to the IRS and the figure they calculated – then the penalty should not be imposed because “he acted reasonably and in good faith.”
According to the Notice of Deficiency in court documents, the IRS claimed Beyoncé owed $805,850 for 2018 and $1,442,747 for 2019, plus a total of $449,719.40 for those years.
His agent and attorney did not respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
The most Grammy-winning artist of all time is seeking a trial in Los Angeles for this case.
Beyoncé’s reported net worth is $500 million – excluding her husband Jay Z’s $2.8 billion fortune, which has made him one of the richest people in the world.
The former member of Destiny’s Child has been a chart-topping artist for decades and monetizes her singing career, including selling more than 200 million records worldwide and selling multiple arenas and stadiums for her concerts worldwide.
In 2019, one of the years when the tax dispute worried, Beyoncé signed a $60 million deal with Netflix for her special “Homecoming,” based on her 2018 Coachella lead role.
The pop superstar also owns clothing brand Ivy Park, which she first launched in 2016 with Topshop owner Philip Green.
But Beyoncé’s company, Parkwood Entertainment, bought entire ownership of the streetwear brand in 2018 – another year on the US Tax Court petition.
