He is a Colorado native
Roberts is a Colorado native born on March 15, 1991. He grew up in a town called Steamboat Springs, where he was born into the sport of skiing when he was almost two years old, bonding his first pair of skis.
In an Instagram post, Roberts recalled exactly the moment he knew he would become a professional skier. “One night when I was eight, I was poofing under the lights at my home in Howelsen,” she began.
“My mom just yelled at me because I had to do another run. For some reason I thought, ‘I’m going to be a professional skier,’ as I entered the darkness that night,” he continued. “Everything just fell into place at that moment. I was going to do that. I remember the exact place and every day I pictured the emotion of that night in my mind.”
Prior to his professional career in the sport, Roberts skied at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Roberts suffered a horrific injury at the age of nine that had the potential to end his career. Before her first big competition, she had risky surgery that shattered her thighbone.
But his passion for the sport mixed with a fearless mindset drew him back to the slopes. Roberts was a college athlete competing for Middlebury College in Vermont for four years. His successful run in the team paved the way for his future success in the sport.
He is a former professional alpine skier.
After four years at Middlebury, Roberts was inducted into the USA Ski Team B after graduating in 2014. Joining the national team as a new college skier was an impressive feat, but Roberts allowed his skills to be recognized at the World University Games held in Trentino, Italy. , finished 7th overall in the giant slalom in December 2013.
“I learned about life thanks to this sport,” wrote Roberts in an Instagram post, dedicated to loved ones who supported him throughout his skiing journey. “I’m raising a much needed beer for this great sport and I’m leaving with a deep feeling that anything is possible in life – you just have to saddle up and move on.”
According to his official USA Ski and Snowboard biography, during the 2015 season Roberts finished third in the NorAm Cup Finals in the giant slalom and finished his successful season in sixth place at the USA National Championship.
Despite missing a spot on the American team for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, he made 31 World Cup starts, competed for the USA Ski team and won two national championships. His last race as a professional alpine skier was at the Nor-Am Cup in March 2019.
He was the first male alpine skier of his caliber who turned out to be gay.
In a December 2020 interview with New York TimesRoberts came out as gay and became the first elite male alpine skier to do so in public. Part of the reason it emerged was to inspire other young skiers that they could compete at the highest levels regardless of their gender.
“I woke up one morning and said, ‘Enough is enough,'” Roberts said. “I love this sport more than anything – I’m so lucky and privileged to have done it – but I can’t go another day without trying to reach the person I need to be. For each of us, I think one of these main goals should be happiness and authenticity.
He had a special relationship with his late brother.
Roberts lost her younger brother Murphy in August 2016. He died at the age of 22 after suffering a diabetic seizure and a head injury while walking. Murphy grew up with Type 1 diabetes but, in Roberts’ words, “inspired” friends, family, and strangers alike.

After some time away from the slopes, Roberts returned to the skis wearing a “send to Murph” helmet. Although he no longer skis professionally, he continues to do so for fun—plus he participates in the annual hometown race dedicated to Murphy.
