Over the years, Jimmie Johnson’s wife, Chandra Janway, and their children have been seen supporting him from the stands at his races and championship events. However, following the recent tragedy of his family, the NASCAR driver, who has been married to Janway since December 2004, will not compete at this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago.
“LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has chosen to withdraw the #84 Carvana Chevrolet from the NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago this weekend,” the stock car racing team said in a statement. “The Johnson family has requested privacy at this time and no further disclosure will be made.”
Police believe Johnson’s mother-in-law, Terry Janway, shot and killed her husband, Jack Janway, and their grandson, Dalton, late June 26 at the family’s home in Muskogee, Oklahoma, police confirmed to PEOPLE. Terry and Jack are Janway’s parents.
Police told PEOPLE that Terry was found dead in the residence with her husband, Jack, and their 11-year-old grandson. Their deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide, and police believe Terry is the primary suspect.
“Additional information will be published if it becomes available,” the ministry said.
