Tom Hanks’ new novel about filmmaking draws inspiration from his own life, sometimes including the negative behaviors he admits he exhibits.
Talking to BBC News about her debut novel The Making of Another Great Cinematic Masterpiece Hanks, 66 – featuring an actor character interrupting filming for a production – said I “shot every single one of these behavioral moments myself on a set.”
“Not everyone on a movie set does their best every day,” Hanks said. “I had a hard time trying to be a professional while my life was turned upside down in more ways than one, and all that was required of me that day was to be funny, charming and loving – and that’s the last thing I feel.”
While Hanks admits that he doesn’t always behave well during a movie shoot, Forrest Gump The actor stated that the only “great sin” in filmmaking is wasting a production’s time.
“The thing that can’t happen in a motion picture is when someone can’t make fun of the timing, length or budget of the shot,” he said. “This is a great sin in the movie business.”

Hanks added that the public “will be surprised to be told how many people know they can get away with this and be told they can get away with it because they carry the movie on their shoulders.”
According to BBC News, the actor’s novel features characters described as “crying babies” and “psychological train wrecks” in his story revolving around the making of a major superhero movie.
According to the newspaper, Hanks laughed at questions about certain film industry figures who may have inspired the novel’s story.
According to a Penguin Random House summary of the book, The Making of Another Great Cinematic Masterpiece consists of three separate parts and follows the development of a comic from its inception in the late 1940s to its publication in the ’70s, before a major Hollywood director “decided to turn it into a contemporary superhero movie”.

The synopsis is, “Intersected throughout, there are three comics that stand out in the story – all created by Tom Hanks himself – including the comic that has become this novel’s greatest cinematic masterpiece.”
Hanks’ new book comes after starring in three movies in 2022. ElvisDisney’s live-action adaptation PinocchioAnd A Man Named Otto.
