Taylor Swift’s startling (and widely-dragged) “Karma Remix” with Ice Spice seemed like it could put a limit to the growing controversy surrounding Matty Healy and his offensive remarks about the Bronx rapper in a recent podcast. However, a new interview with Swift’s rumored girlfriend only adds to the more Streisand effect.
During the weekend, New Yorker “Who is Matt Healy?” about the enigmatic British singer, who explores his provocative personality through interviews with himself and some of Swift’s music peers, such as Jack Antonoff. published a comprehensive profile. Of course, Healy’s responses to some of the backlash she received last year garnered the most social media attention.
The 34-year-old specifically addressed the internet backlash for her appearance on the “The Adam Friedland Show” podcast in February, where hosts Friedland and Nick Mullen referred to Ice Spice as “Inuit Spice Girl” and “chubby Chinese woman”. while using Chinese and Hawaiian accents to mimic him. Healy can be heard laughing with her hosts, and at another point is admitted to masturbating to the porn site “Ghetto Gaggers”, which fetishizes the abuse of Black women.
Asked if author Jia Tolentino’s appearance on the “dirtbag left” podcast was a deliberate provocation, Healy replied, “A little bit, but it doesn’t really matter. No one sits there at night crouched in front of the computer and their boyfriends come and say, ‘What’s the matter, darling?’ says. and they say, ‘This thing with Matty Healy. This will not happen.”
Has he met a Swiftie?
When Tolentino suggested that his words might actually matter, the 34-year-old actor said, “So, either you cheated or – sorry – you’re a liar. Either you’re lying that you’re hurt or you’re just a little mental because you’re hurt. It’s just that people say, ‘Oh, there’s something bad in there, Let me get as close to him as possible so you can see how good I am.” And I want them to do that because they’re demonstrating something at a very basic level.
Healy had previously apologized for the Ice Spice incident during a concert in April 1975. And Ice Spice debuted as The 1975 stan earlier this year. Presumably, the drill rapper was addressing some of those who criticized his collaboration with Swift — which is largely considered a PR purge — and thanked his “real” fans who “wanted to see a slut win.” twitter after his performance with the Grammy-winning actor at MetLife Stadium over the weekend.
Still, Healy’s latest doubling of her troubled antics has angered the internet, both Swifties and non-Switfis alike.
Only time will tell if Swift’s PR team can withstand Healy being in the singer’s squeaky orbit much longer. Healy, on the other hand, seems to be committed to the Edgelord business.
