Kelly Clarkson made sure she wasn’t taken by surprise by her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock’s harsh divorce album “Chemistry.”
The 41-year-old singer revealed on Thursday’s “Today” episode that she and Blackstock had a “little text exchange” about the album before it was released on Friday.
“I don’t even remember why or how, but I was like, ‘Hey, I didn’t reduce us to one. [thing],'” he explained.
“‘You know what I’m saying? It’s all there, the journey. The beauty is there too. There’s a lot of pain now, but that’s what it is for all of us.'”
While Clarkson realized that Blackstock probably wouldn’t listen to the hardcore album, he backed off a bit for the sake of his kids.
“It’s very personal. And I’ve always released personal music – I guess I’m that type of writer in general, everybody knows that,” he said.
“I guess when you have kids… ‘What am I going to do here?’ That’s why I was very selective about the songs I chose for the album.”
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 after seven years of marriage. The couple, who share a 9-year-old daughter, River Rose, and 7-year-old son, Remington Alexander, finally settled their separation in March 2022, after two years of court battles.
During this time, the singer “Because of you” began to write “Chemistry”. However, she had to sit with the songs for about three years before she was ready to share them with the world.

“I waited until I got through this. So it’s like a different chapter for me now,” she explained. “I had to wait to put it out so I could do interviews and honestly not cry at it all. It’s so intense to experience that kind of loss, it’s a grief.”
Earlier this week, Clarkson told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe he was “not getting it done.” [the divorce] good ”- despite trying to put on a happy face.
“I don’t know how people got through something like this because I won’t say I did it gracefully. I wasn’t alone behind closed doors.”
Clarkson recalled that she often “cryed so much” that she “couldn’t speak” while handling the fact that their marriage had failed.
Despite the fact that the talk show host has time to recover, she is not “looking” for love anytime soon.
