Fans of Kanye West (now known as Ye) longing to see the troubled rapper’s failed comeback as a television creator can now watch the pilot episode of the canned HBO project on YouTube. (Maybe not for long.)
On Sunday, a YouTuber named Gearashi leaked the pilot episode of Ye’s Larry David-inspired comedy show. Slightly Inappropriate. According to this VibrationThe video was copied from: borate Private Vimeo account of director Larry Charles. The nearly 30-minute episode has already reached several other channels.
Amid the Yeezy founder’s extensive list of undermined projects, there’s a significant air of mystery around. Slightly Inappropriateallegedly inspired by Ye’s love of HBOs Curb the enthusiasm besides its appearance environment in 2007
You shot the pilot with an eclectic cast in the same year. seizeJB Smoove and Jeff Garlin, stand-up comedian Wyatt Cenac, actress Kym Whitley, former manager Don C and rapper GLC. In the show, Ye plays himself as he navigates a hilariously unstable version of the rap star life surrounded by his crew, family members, and girlfriend. The untitled pilot sees Ye signing a chaotic CD and later meeting a boy through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, later discovering that he isn’t actually sick.
Over the years, several theories have been put forward as to why the show was never picked up. HBO executives allegedly thought they focused too much on supporting characters rather than the central hip-hop star who essentially played a “straight guy.” Charles, who led the pilot, also noted the cable network’s lack of diversity at the time. In his 2019 profile for The Daily Beast, he assumed “there wouldn’t be the Kardashians” if the show aired “because they would be characters on the Kanye show rather than a supporting character in the Kardashians.”
Cenac, who plays Ye’s cousin in the drama, said: Vulture In 2013, when HBO only requested a half-hour episode, they initially offered a one-hour pilot. In the same interview, Cenac said that he and Uprights Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Besser will visit Ye’s home to train him in improv comedy. He says West “knows that he’s not a good improviser,” which may explain why he’s diverting the show’s funnier moments to other actors.
Speaking of Cenac, this isn’t the first time Ye’s pilot has surfaced online. In 2013, the comedian surprised guests with the screening of the entire episode in his weekly stand-up show. Recordings of the comedy show briefly went viral on the internet before it was removed.
Given that Ye is less online these days due to several controversies that led to his temporary ban from Twitter, fans may have a longer window to check out their now-fledged HBO dreams.
