John Mellencamp was the first to admit that he didn’t show ex-fiancee Meg Ryan the respect she deserved.
“She is a great girl. “I’m just like a boyfriend,” the “It Hurts So Good” singer told Esquire while participating in the magazine’s “What I’ve Learned” interview series on Tuesday.
Still, Mellencamp said, “I love Meg Ryan. I went with her for 10 years. She doesn’t really like me.”
The 71-year-old rock star and “When Harry Met Sally” actress, 61, began dating in 2011 after her divorce from model Elaine Irwin and actor Dennis Quaid.
“We lost so much,” Mellencamp recalled the beginning of their love.
“We didn’t know how to do anything. I’ve never checked out of a hotel alone. He and I went to a grocery store and they asked for our credit card and we looked at each other and said, ‘Here it is,’ and they said, ‘No, you have to put this in this thing.’ and ‘What happens next? ?’ We laughed at how stupid we were, we cried so much.”
The couple broke up in 2014 due to the distance between them (Mellencamp lived in Indiana, while Ryan lived in New York).
The “Jack & Diane” singer infamously declared on “The Howard Stern Show” in 2017 that the “Sleepless in Seattle” star hated him “to death”, but they reunited that year.
The stars announced their engagement in 2018, but broke up again the following year.
Mellencamp thinks Ryan has gone a lot further since the last time they went their separate ways.
“I think he learned how to do everything and I learned to do nothing,” he frankly admitted to Esquire.
He’s been married three times and has five children, including former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Teddi Mellencamp.
Ryan has two children, including actor Jack Quaid.
