Emma Stone is growing up in her next movie role.
On Thursday, Searchlight Pictures released the official trailer for director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie. Poor ThingsIt stars 34-year-old Stone as a woman named Bella Baxter, who is resurrected from the dead by a scientist played by Willem Dafoe.
As Dafoe’s character says in the trailer, Bella’s “brain and body aren’t exactly in sync,” which leads to some interesting moments as she learns to blink awkwardly and dance around.
Dafoe’s scientist describes the reborn woman as “moving at a fast pace,” which seems to quickly spark Bella’s desire to seek freedom and explore the world.
In a trailer full of weird footage – Dafoe’s character’s “experiments” also seem to include a duck with a French bulldog’s head and a duck-headed dog, with Bella kissing a character played by Mark Ruffalo who appears to be chasing him. It is then shown that Bella slaps him and calls his name from the street before leaving the character almost speechless.
An official synopsis of the film calls the film “the incredible story and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe).
Bella proves to be “eager to learn” under the scientist’s watch, but soon escapes on an intercontinental whirlwind adventure with “the lithe and depraved lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo). Freed from the prejudices of her time, Bella grows determined to aim for equality and freedom. stop.”
