Australian comedian Barry Humphries, best known for his role as Dame Edna Everage, has died at the age of 89.
He was in hospital in Sydney after experiencing complications following hip surgery in March.
Humphries played Dame Edna, the lilac-haired drag character known for over 60 years for her love of gladiolus and her famous slogan “Hello Possums.” He played the rough drunk Sir Les Patterson, among other characters.
His family confirmed his death, saying in a statement, “He was completely himself until the end, never losing his brilliance, unmatched intelligence, and generous spirit.”
“For more than 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer at his core, touring until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never happen,” the statement said. “His viewers were precious to him and he never underestimated them.
“Although he is best remembered for his work in the theatre, he was a painter, writer, poet and collector, and a lover of art of all kinds,” the family said. “He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend and confidant to many. His death leaves a void in many lives. The characters he created and made millions laugh will live on.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Humphries, saying that despite all the characters he created, “Barry was always the brightest star in that galaxy.”
“He was a great wit, satirist, writer, and absolutely one-of-a-kind, both gifted and talented. May he rest in peace.”
Comedians Matt Lucas and Ricky Gervais spearheaded the praise, calling Humphries a “comedy genius”.
Humphries is survived by his wife, Lizzie Spender, and their four children.
