When we think of summer, we think of Bad Bunny’s. Flour Verano Sin Ti. But when Bad Bunny thinks of summer, he thinks of Puerto Rican nostalgia.
The 29-year-old “Coco Chanel” singer recalled her favorite summer memories when talking to PEOPLE about her new Pepsi ad for Apple Music’s Press Play on Summer campaign, set to air on Thursday.
Bad Bunny (née Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) tells PEOPLE, “I have so many memories of highways in Puerto Rico, my house on the west side of Puerto Rico, and listening to music. I was always a playlist freak.” exclusively.
“When I was little, when there were no platforms and no way to make playlists, I found a way. I would buy CDs and create playlists on CDs and collect different kinds of music. … And it was always about pleasing my father.
He adds that he will be adding a few songs to these playlists for his father, mother, siblings and a little for himself.
“I have so many memories on these highways listening to these CDs and playlists that I’m going to create. And yet, every time I go west of Puerto Rico, I get flashbacks from those moments, and it feels good.”
The new Pepsi ad leans towards the summer aesthetic of Bad Bunny, who takes on the role of lifeguard and continues the good vibes with his new song “Where She Goes.” In the ad, he single-handedly controls these good feelings with the simple task of opening a Pepsi bottle.
Via Summer Press Play, new and returning subscribers can unlock up to three months of free listening on Apple Music – what Bad Bunny joked was what attracted him to the partnership in the first place:
“Really, my free Apple Music subscription expired. I needed three more months, so I said, ‘Let’s do it,'” he jokes. “The truth is, when summer comes, the whole world knows that Bad Bunny and summer always go hand in hand. Last year we released one of the most important albums of my career. Flour Verano Sin Ti, so this year we wanted to continue my summer music and I thought it would be interesting to do it with Pepsi. It was time to start summer, so here we are.”
Elsewhere, the “Me Porto Bonito” singer says the ideal summer is the Puerto Rican beach, sun, and some “musicita.”
“I love everything – it depends on the time and the day. I like to wear some salsita on a Sunday afternoon, if it’s night time, I like to listen to some old and new reggaeton. It all depends on the mood,” she says.
“Where She Goes” is Bad Bunny’s last album since his collaboration with Grupo Frontera on “un x100to”.
In the “Where She Goes” music video, he recruited stars like Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean, Dominic Fike, Lil Uzi Vert, and more for a cameo.
In May, he joined Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily to talk about the song, saying he listens to the song “100 times a day.”
Regarding making the song, she said, “I just felt it. I had this feeling and said ‘F —, let’s do it’. That’s what the music is about, for fun. I went straight to the studio with my guy… and he said, ‘No, I think I have a new anthem’ I said. I’m really excited to show the world my new work.”
Bad Bunny is already looking forward to performing “WHERE SHE GOES” live, but isn’t sure when it will debut. “I definitely want to perform this song soon,” said MC Zane Lowe, adding, “Where is it? I don’t know. Maybe I should wait until next year.”
As for her personal life, the “Tití Me Preguntó” singer said, “I’m enjoying my life right now. What’s next?” “I don’t know. Right now I’m just enjoying my life; I’m just living and breathing,” he said.
