Whenever a celebrity relationship disintegrates, there are always questions about whether it’s real and what hasn’t been spoken about publicly. Even though the news of their breakup has been confirmed to multiple news outlets, fans have theories that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are still together.
Entertainment Tonight first broke the news on Saturday, April 8, 2023, that Swift and Alwyn had split after six years together. The two were very private about their relationship, but Alwyn frequently contributed to her albums by being the muse or co-writing her songs with her, from Reputation all the way to her recent album Midnights. It was an “amicable” split, according to sources quoted by ET: “The relationship had just run its course. It’s why [Alwyn] hasn’t been spotted at any shows.” People later confirmed the news independently.
Are Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn still together?
Are Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn still together? The lack of confirmation from either of their reps is what’s adding fuel to the fire that Swift and Alwyn could still be together—as of Monday, April 10, 2023, all we’ve got are anonymous sources. “They’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together,” a source told People in a follow-up article to the break-up announcement. The tipster revealed that “ultimately” Swift and Alwyn “weren’t the right fit for one another.”
The insider continued: “They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation,” referring to Swift’s 2017 studio album. “Then the pandemic hit, and they were locked down together and able to continue growing their relationship in this insulated way. But he didn’t really ‘know’ her yet outside of that bubble… Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public,” the source continued. “The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.” They concluded that Swift and Alwyn “are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe. They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now.”
Chalk it up to denial perhaps, but there are fans out there who are not ready to accept Swift and Alwyn are broken up. TikTok and Twitter communities have cited celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi, which said there was a “ceremony” between Alwyn and Swift. Yes, supposedly a wedding ceremony. “She’s gotten married already (Taylor to Joe),” an anonymous tipster wrote in a DM, which DeuxMoi shared. “That’s what everyone thinks,” she replied. “I know it for sure! Via an event planner,” said the source. “There was 100p [percent] a ceremony btw, Joe & Taylor, it was not in the US therefore I’m not sure the legalities behind it or the ceremony,” added in overlay text. On TikTok, user Karl_Delo wrote to not believe the breakup news because of her song “Sweet Nothing” and “you do not write that song about someone you’re going to break up with.”
“there is no way taylor swift would break up with mr. dress, delicate, call It what you want, king of my heart, gorgeous, london boy, lover, paper rings, peace, willow, invisible string, gold rush, lavender haze, not when a whole LOVER album literally exist???” one fan tweeted. Other fans will still hold on to hope to their relationship. A fan tweeted, “and when taylor swift posts a picture with joe alwyn and the caption being ‘Ain’t it funny? Rumors fly… oh and by the way, 1989 (taylor’s version) is out now!’”
Alwyn co-wrote a few songs on Swift’s 2020 album Folklore and is believed to have inspired several of her tracks, including “Gorgeous,” “Call It What You Want” and “Cardigan.” As one of EW’s 2020 Entertainers of the Year, Taylor opened up to the publication about the making of the album which fans now know included her boyfriend as a collaborator on the song, “Betty.” Speaking about her experience of making the album in quarantine, Taylor explained, “It was weird because I had never made an album and not played it for my girlfriends or told my friends. The only people who knew were the people that I was making it with, my boyfriend, my family, and then my management team.” She added, “So that’s the smallest number of people I’ve ever had know about something. I’m usually playing it for everyone that I’m friends with. So I had a lot of friends texting me things like, ‘Why didn’t you say on our everyday Facetimes you were making a record?’”
In her latest release Midnights, she explicitly said that the track “Lavender Haze” was inspired by their relationship. In an Instagram video explaining the track, Taylor said, “I happened upon the phrase ‘Lavender Haze’ when I was watching Mad Men and I looked it up because it sounded cool and it turns out it was a phrase in the 50s where they would just describe being in love. If you were in the lavender haze, then that meant that you were in that all-encompassing love glow.”
She continued, “I thought that was really beautiful. I guess theoretically when you’re in the lavender haze, you’ll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud. I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just like ‘public figures,’ because we live in the era of social media and if the world finds out that you’re in love with somebody, they’re going to weigh in on it. My relationship for six years, we’ve had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it. So this song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff.”
