As 2022 draws to a close, listeners wanted to upload two things to their streaming apps: SZA’s new album and loads of Christmas music.
A New Jersey-bred R&B singer and songwriter, SZA tops the Billboard 200 with her long-awaited second LP “SOS” and Mariah Carey’s holiday warhorse “All I Want for Christmas Is You” ” is leading a tinsel storm at the top of the Hot 100 singles list.
According to Billboard and data provider Luminate, “SOS” is #1 for the third time in the United States with 169 million streams, nearly all of the 128,000 “album equivalent units”. In the three weeks since its release, SZA’s album has garnered a total of nearly 810 million clicks on streaming services.
“All I Want” holds #1 on the Hot 100 for the fourth time this season, and it’s the 12th overall. (Carey’s song, released in 1994, did not reach #1 until 2019.)
Billboard’s weekly tracking period begins on Friday, and with Christmas falling on a Sunday, the last week of the year still had four days after the holidays. However, with a total of eight tracks in the top 10—all decades old—season singles still dominated listening.
Besides “All I Want,” Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (No. 2), Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (No. 3), Wham!’s “Last Christmas” (No. 4) includes movies. ), Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (No. 5), Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (No. 6), José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” (No. 7 ) and Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Carol” (No. 9).
Non-holiday releases in the top 10 are Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” (No. 8) and Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” (No. 10).
Back on the album chart, Swift’s “Midnights” is at #2, but Santa is right behind him: Michael Bublé’s ‘Christmas’ is #3 and Cole’s LP is ‘The Christmas Song’ 5. . “Villains” by rap super producer Metro Boomin is ranked 4th.
