Russell Brand denies allegations of “very serious wrongdoing” made against him over his past “random” behavior.
In a new video shared on social media on Friday, Brand, 48, said he “absolutely denies” the allegations and called them “extremely egregious and offensive attacks.”
“I have received two extremely disturbing letters, or a letter and an email, one from a mainstream media TV company and the other from a newspaper, listing a repeated list of extremely horrific and offensive attacks,” he began the video. But among these astonishing, quite baroque attacks, there are also some very serious allegations that I have absolutely refuted.”
Although Brand did not name the TV company or newspaper, his video comes ahead of a new special investigation episode of the UK current affairs programme. Posts It airs on Saturday night.
Prior to the show’s release, multiple outlets across the UK, Evening Standard Channel 4 presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy reportedly sparked speculation about the content of the Saturday show after a since-deleted post on X (formerly known as Twitter) read “There’s something going on”, which also included a screenshot of the show. .
Channel 4 did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
As the video continued, Brand addressed the time frame of the allegations and insisted that any relationships he had during a period of what he described as “promiscuity” were “consensual.”
“These allegations belong to the period when I was working in the mainstream, constantly appearing in newspapers and acting in the cinema. And as I have written extensively in my books, I was being very, very promiscuous. Now, during this period of promiscuity, the relationships I had were strictly and always consensual.
“I was always transparent about it at the time; I was almost too transparent. And now I am being transparent about this issue. And to see transparency turn into crime, I absolutely deny that,” Brand added.
The actor later claimed that he felt his “voice” was not validated by the mainstream media and that there was an agenda to control his voice.
He continued his response: “I’m okay with them using my books and stand-up to talk about my past promiscuous, consensual behavior.” “What I seriously reject are these very, very serious allegations of criminality.”
“It is also worth noting that there are witnesses whose evidence directly contradicts the narratives of these two mainstream media outlets that were apparently trying to create, in my view, a coordinated attack,” Brand added.
“I don’t want to go further into this because of the seriousness of the allegations, but I feel attacked and they clearly work very closely together,” he said.
The actor concluded: “Of course we will investigate this issue because the situation is very, very serious. In the meantime, I want you to stay close, stay awake, but most of all, please stay free if you can.”
Representatives for the brand did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional comment.
