Speaking to PEOPLE last month, Chmerkovskiy opened up about how special it was to give Shai a sibling after he and Murgatroyd survived their fertility struggles.
“He knew the story was going on that the mother had an egg and then the egg broke. Finally, at this point, telling him that this egg didn’t break, seeing that baby come is a huge moment for him and for us,” she said. “Now there are kicks, my stomach is moving. It is also very special to watch my 6-year-old son perceive that moment.”
Last summer, Murgatroyd told PEOPLE about Shai’s commitment to being a big brother during her journey through IVF and said she was “obsessed with not getting pregnant.”
“She asks me every day when the baby will be there,” she said at the time. “I said, ‘Give it a few weeks.’ I’m counting the days. He’ll be the best big brother, I know that.”
Murgatroyd said Shai was often asked if he had a sibling. “Some days it was just too much,” he admitted. “I was so touched because I didn’t know what to say to her anymore. I told her the first two times but kept it vague. ‘Oh my God, we’re going to have a baby,’ ‘well.
“I guess that’s another tricky part of the job, as he sees other kids with his siblings,” Murgatroyd continued.
He added: “And of course when [the pregnancy] goes, I stop telling and he stops asking. I never told him how I lost them. I just stopped saying. Then she stopped asking about it for a while.”
