Lily Rabe says she helped her kids “strike out” from their acting roles after finishing a project and get back into their mother’s life.
While speaking to PEOPLE at Chanel’s 16th Annual Tribeca Artists Dinner held at NYC’s Balthazar restaurant, the mother of three explained that while every acting job she does is different, her need to leave in the end remains the same.
“Listen, my kids always help me get back to the present moment,” says 40-year-old Rabe. “So when I’m in doubt, that’s what I go for.”
This city owl Celebrating the film’s official selection for the Tribeca Film Festival, the co-director shares his children with actor Hamish Linklater, 45. Linklater also has a 16-year-old daughter named Lucinda Rose from a previous relationship.
While Rabe typically finds it easy to get out of work mode, don’t be drawn to PEOPLE. Love and DeathThe drama series currently airing on Max has been tougher than usual.
“With that, I definitely had to work harder to shake it up a little bit,” she says. “And there were times when I didn’t want to shake it up just because we were keeping things going.”
Love and Death Based on the true story of Wylie, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery, who was accused of murdering her lover’s wife, Betty Gore, in 1980. During the attack, Betty was hit 41 times with a wooden ax.
Rabe plays Betty in the series, while Jesse Plemons plays her husband, Allan Gore. Elizabeth Olsen stars as Candy in the 7-episode limited series, all of which are currently airing.
An earlier version of Montgomery’s story hit the small screen on the Hulu original series in March 2022. SugarStarring Jessica Biel as the lead character. Melanie Lynskey played Betty.
city owl, Meanwhile, for Rabe it is a family affair. He co-directed the film with Linklater, who also adapted the screenplay from Chuck Klosterman’s novel of the same name.
According to its official synopsis, the film is “a gleaming, dark Reagan Era comedy set in the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota, in the early days of the Minnesota century until the region’s blizzard.” Rabe also stars in the film alongside Ed Harris, Finn Wittrock, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and more.
As for their children, Rabe and Linklater kept them out of the public eye, not even revealing their names.
The couple welcomed their first child together, their daughter, in 2017. Rabe announced the birth of her baby girl, in honor of International Women’s Day in March of that year, by posting a photo of her holding the newborn baby closely. “Happy International Women’s Day. Today. Tomorrow. Every day. Girls are magic,” she wrote next to the sweet shot.
The couple later welcomed their second child together in June 2020. Rabe made fun of baby news (and simultaneously announced her pregnancy) on Instagram that August, posting a photo of her with a visible baby bump.
Rabe subtly announced her third arrival on Instagram in a Father’s Day commemoration, by sharing a black and white photo of Linklater holding a baby whose face has just come out of the frame.

The actress dropped the note “There is the best” under the sweet image of the couple.
The couple did not share any further details, including the gender of their new baby.
