Don’t tell Anderson Cooper, but our silos are on fire.
Sunday night episode Subrogation It was so traumatic – both so real and so premature – that fans of the show reacted by setting them on fire and running away screaming. They were so upset by how disturbingly the events of the “America Decides” reflected the events of the 2016 election, and both the media’s role in platforming provocative political candidates, and their reluctance to vet extremism—as long as it provided good ratings.
My social media feed on Sunday nights and Monday mornings is typically made up of people’s reactions to the latest episode of the show. Subrogation. This week, that meant navigating through the endless reactions from fans screaming, crying and vomiting to borrow money. that meme– “America Decides” for how sad it is for them.
The episode took place in the newsroom and office space of ATN, the cable network largely owned by Waystar Royco. As a presidential election unfolds, we see the Roy brothers’ different personal and professional priorities determine how they want the network’s coverage to go, depending on which candidate wins. They make decisions about how to cover up the burning of the ballot boxes, whether to provide an opposing viewpoint to a fascist speaking head and, most distressingly, whether to favor the white supremacist-backed candidate. what would be good for their company’s profitability.
The episode was a bleak portrait of what probably happened behind the scenes on both 2016 and 2020 election nights. It was also a revelation and an indictment of how corporate-backed news outlets that compromise between reality and business have operated in the years since Trump’s election. And that was a deafening alarm bell, signaling how problematic viewpoints can be for the sanctity of the nation, as CNN host Anderson Cooper expressed in the network’s response to the Donald Trump town hall—something only Shiv (Sarah Snook) seems eager for. here to express
In an episode that lasted a little over an hour, Subrogation managed to undo three years of treatment. (Just me? I doubt it.) It also made it uncomfortably clear how little lessons were learned; We might think those elections and the dark days that followed are animals of the past, but the billionaire-controlled world still has its claws in every way it operates.
The way ATN’s election news fueled the fire, one of the many factors that led to the January 6th uprising, is the most traumatic plot. But the close race, which should have gone to the non-extremist, overtly more qualified Democrat, was instead called for, with electoral techniques, the white supremacist-backed megalomaniac (Justin Kirk’s Jeryd Mencken) and went a little too far back to bother. all of us again.
Given how urgent these issues are today, some viewers seemed to think it was perhaps irresponsible for TV’s coolest, “best” drama series to air such a story.
It’s like being invited back to middle school’s most hurtful bullying session and having to look at it from a new angle – or, I suppose, being asked to remember how self-interested media companies influenced a vote that led to national change. tons that caused increased hatred and even the death of the entire human population. Pleasant!
