God Bless the King.
When King Charles III arrived at Westminster Abbey with Queen Camilla for the ceremony, he took a modern take on the coronation today, abandoning traditional royal attire in favor of a custom-made gown.
As many royal watchers suspect, the new 74-year-old king chose not to wear the silk stockings and trousers typically worn at coronations, a look one royal told The Sun was found “too outdated”.
However, he did not choose to don his full military uniform, as some suspect.
According to The Telegraph, the monarch instead wore a cream silk top with an old State Gown, a crimson Coronation Tunic, and Royal Naval pants.
Inspired by similar designs worn by King George V and King George VI at their respective coronations, his tunic was made by Ede and Ravenscroft.
Also inspired by King George V and King George VI, the white Turnbull & Asser shirt features embroidered oak leaves and acorns on the collar and cuffs.
Meanwhile, the King’s breeches are part of his regular attire and are regularly worn as part of Her Majesty’s Royal Navy full ceremonial frock coat.
Continuing his commitment to sustainability, Charles chose, as is typical, to re-wear the same extravagant State Gown that his grandfather, King George VI, wore at his own coronation in 1937.
Last year, his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch, who ascended the throne after Elizabeth died at the age of 96, waved to thousands of people lining the streets of London in his gilded Diamond Jubilee State Car.
Charles looked gorgeous in his tunic, while Camilla wore an elegant white embroidered gown by Bruce Oldfield alongside the iconic diamond Coronation Necklace and the late Queen Elizabeth’s own coronation gown.
During the ceremony, both will be crowned with meaningful royal pieces.
At the time of his coronation, St. Edward’s Crown will be placed on the King’s head, and he will wear the Imperial State Crown as he leaves the monastery.
Camilla will carry the dazzling tiara that Queen Mary wore in 1911, and the purple style will be worn by Queen Mary II. It will get a modern update with the addition of some of Elizabeth’s jewels.
As for Kate Middleton, she chose to go uncrowned on her father-in-law’s big day, instead donning a leaf-embroidered cap by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen and twining with her 8-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte.
Prince William has traditionally continued this by donning the ceremonial dress uniform of the Welsh Guard, along with his various medals and badges.
