Frank Ray took the breakup song to a new level.
On Thursday, PEOPLE privately premieres the rising country star’s latest music video for her song “Someone Else’s Whiskey.” To celebrate his release, Ray talked about the inspiration behind his comic creative side.
Ray tells PEOPLE: “I love ‘Somebody Else’s Whiskey’ for its sarcastic humor, which is a direct reflection of my personality.
“I hope fans can take away the feeling of finding a silver lining to end a relationship,” adds Ray, who is currently touring with Old Dominion. “Sometimes that’s what’s best for both parties, and that’s what this song does best. It doesn’t really put the blame on anyone, but instead says, ‘Hey, we’re all happier now’.”
The music video begins with Ray relaxing by a pool, as a woman scolds him, throws a drink in his face, and yells “I’m leaving you”. Despite everything, he remains calm and seems to be taking the situation lightly.
Then, she smiles and says goodbye as she leaves in her car. He continues to enjoy his day by the pool by making himself a drink and jumping into the pool.
“It was so fun to shoot the music video! The idea behind it was super clean. There’s a brief moment where we showcase the breakup and then the rest, I have an absolute one-man blast at a newly found party.” says. “The film crew found a great location with a tiki bar and a backyard pool where we focused the entire video, so I had a lot of fun drinking to myself.”
Included in his EP “Somebody Else’s Whiskey” A little Getcha in August.
“I knew the next single would be ‘Somebody Else’s Whiskey’ because I first performed the song to a live audience at a writers convention in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin,” he says. “I remember adding it to my playlist at the last minute, and the crowd’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive. At the end of the first chorus, people were laughing and cheering.”
He continues, “It was real-time feedback, so I knew we had something special. I hope everyone who listens to this song has the same reaction and can connect with it. Realistically, we’ve all escaped the bullet at some point in our lives when it comes to a bad relationship. This song It gives you a reason to toast.”
