Controversial show host Jerry Springer The Jerry Springer Show, died. He was 79 years old.
According to TMZ, a family spokesperson told Springer that he was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and passed away at his Chicago-area home on Thursday.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people has been central to his success in everything he’s tried, whether it’s politics, broadcast, or pranking people on the street asking for photos or words,” said Jene Galvin, lifelong friend and spokesperson. Springer’s family said in a statement. “His is irreplaceable and his loss is so painful, but memories of his wit, heart and humor will live on.”
The statement was broadcast by Cincinnati TV station NBC affiliate WLWT, where Springer worked as a newscaster and commentator after serving as the city’s mayor and before working on the talk show that brought him to international stardom.
The outlet said her family asks people to pay tribute to someone in need—in keeping with the spirit of the “take care of yourself and each other” mantra.
